Information on Safe Listening Levels
The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that “the daily recommended safe volume levels of any sound is below 85dB for a maximum duration of 8 hours”.
Increased use of smartphones and other devices places children and young people at risk of hearing loss. It is important that children and young people are aware of how to listen to music and devices safely.
- Determine safe levels on devices. Devices should indicate whether the sound level poses an increased risk.
- Limit the use of personal audio devices, as the longer the exposure, the greater the risk.
- At noisy venues, stay away from loud sound sources, such as loudspeakers, and wear noise attenuating ear plugs where possible.
