Impact on Speech and Language Development

Different phonemes in speech lie at different frequencies. A hearing test will determine the quietest level the child can hear at different frequencies.

Once the child’s hearing has been tested this can show if they are missing out on any of the phonemes. When plotted, if their hearing levels fall outside of the speech banana then they will struggle to hear these speech sounds. A speech banana is a term used to help understand where the phonemes appear on an audiogram. This information is useful for Parents, Teachers and Speech and Language Therapists.
