Dyslexia
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a neurological impairment which affects reading and writing skills. It is also known as a specific learning difficulty/difference. A person with dyslexia might have difficulty processing or remembering information, difficulties with organisation and problems with literacy e.g. reading and writing. For more information about the signs of dyslexia, please visit https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/dyslexia/about-dyslexia/signs-of-dyslexia.
Dyslexia often runs in families and is seen as a continuum – it does not affect people in exactly the same way.
Diagnosis
The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) at your child’s school may have a screening tool to check for signs of dyslexia. Dyslexia should be formally assessed by a certified assessor, however, a formal diagnosis is not required to get support in school.
Getting Help in School
You can speak to the SENCo at your child’s school about whether they can help with the diagnosis process and what support they can put in place.
