What is normal Motor Development?
Many children will progress easily through their developmental milestones and learn to roll, sit, crawl and walk themselves. For some children this can be more difficult. This is a brief guide as to how children’s bigger movements develop over time.
FINE MOTOR SKILLS
Fine motor skills involve using the smaller muscles in our forearms, wrists and hands to complete activities.
Developmental Coordination Disorder
DCD is a condition that affects an individual’s physical coordination.
HYPER MOBILITY
Hypermobility is when an individual’s joints have a greater amount of movement and
flexibility in the joints which can result in some pain or discomfort.
FLAT FEET
Flat feet is where the arch alongside the inside edge of the foot is apparently absent or reduced.
CEREBRAL PALSY
Cerebral Palsy is caused by an injury to the brain sustained before, during or soon after birth that affects movement, posture and coordination. It may also affect a child’s ability to speak, learn and look after themselves.
DOWN SYNDROME
Down syndrome is a genetic condition which affects a person’s learning and development and has characteristic facial features.
MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
Muscular Dystrophies are a group of inherited genetic conditions that gradually cause muscles to weaken.
INTOEING AND TOE WALKING
Some of the more common concerns with walking that are referred to physiotherapy are intoeing and toe walking.
