Some children who are largely nil by mouth may have written in their feeding care plans that they can have limited flavours or tasters.
Flavours
- A ‘flavour’ has nothing of substance that can be swallowed
- It is what is left of a fluid when a finger is dipped into it and the drips are shaken off
- To start with, a flavour is dabbed on the middle of your child’s lower or upper lip depending on their ability. This can progress to the tip, then front of their tongue (as advised by SALT)
Tasters
- A minute amount of puree to be swallowed
- At first, a small amount of puree is dabbed on the middle of the lower lip depending on your child’s ability. This can progress to the tip, then front of the tongue if it is well tolerated
