For children who find it difficult to engage in sensory activity, it can be important to help them increase their exploration and flexibility. We can do this by making it easier for them: modelling play ourselves and letting them watch; praising even small engagements in activity; giving alternative methods e.g rather than playing with cornflakes with fingers, using a spoon. If your child avoids certain textures, you may want to start with dry materials first and gradually build up to wetter, stickier textures. Placing a tiny bit on the tray if child is nervous. Model simple language but try to use a few key words rather than lots of language as this can support engagement e.g. ‘shake’ or ‘squeeeeze’ or ‘pour’.
